Father's Day

This past Father's Day, I made 2 cakes for my parents neighbors. They were having a Father's Day / Birthday barbeque. I hope they enjoyed eating them as much as I enjoyed making them.

My Kind Of Fruit Cake

I recently planted a strawberry plant in a pot on our balcony and was curious to see if I could get any strawberries out of it. To my surprise, the plant has done really well and has already produced some delicious strawberries. This inspired me to make a strawberry flavored cake. When thinking about how I was going to decorate it, I thought what better way than to make it look exactly how it tastes.

To fill the strawberry cake, I used a combination of strawberry buttercream and dark chocolate ganache. I don't make too many cakes without chocolate and this was no exception. It reminded me of chocolate covered strawberry! Lastly, I couldn't finish this post without including a picture of my inspirational plant. I hope I will be enjoying its strawberries all summer!

Mother's Day

Mother's Day was so busy! I made 2 cakes, one for my family and one for Colby's family. Here's the one I made for my family party. It was a citrus cake with fresh raspberry filling. YUM!

Below is the cake I made for Colby's mom. It was her birthday the week before and so I thought why not put both on one cake.

I have big plans for a Father's Day cake so be watching for that in a few weeks.

My Final Cake

Last week I finished my last cake decorating class. For our final cake we had to design our own cake using the techniques we learned during that course and this is what I came up with.

Course 3

So here is the reason I started taking these classes...fondant! I've always loved the way fondant looks on cakes but never even knew how to go about using it. This was my first attempt at covering a cake in fondant and it came out so cute.

And this courses finale...

The roses are made completely of fondant. The colors were so much prettier in person, just another example of my photography skills or lack there of. One of the reasons I love fondant is it keeps the cake so moist and fresh. Since it's just Colby and I it can take a while for us to eat a cake, or in this case 2 cakes, especially if we're not sharing with anyone. All in all, I think this course was a success and so far has been my favorite. One more course to go and then I will consider myself a pro :)

Course 2

The 2nd course I took was all about royal icing flowers. Royal icing hardens very quickly so its perfect to use when making flowers or other shapes and figures used to decorate cakes. Here are some of the flowers I made. The daisies and daffodils are my favorite.

All of these flowers were used to decorate our final cake.
